Headlights,
It must have been the stars
Smoky nights, smoky nights
But there you are, there you are
Full of possibility
When the cards are stacked right
When will this shit end
I need your warmth to sleep tonight
Dial tone,
I must have been alone
Call my name, call my name
Everyone in this town looks the same
Full of possibility
When the cards are stacked right
When will this shit end
I need your warmth to sleep tonight
Headlights
It must have been the stars
When I look in your eyes
I don't see lovin'
When I look in your eyes
I see haste
When I look in your eyes
I see the future
Whoa, it's been a while
There's trouble all around us I'm fearing lies
Spinning like the ties that bind us both
No no no, I never set this up
It's been a while since we said goodbye
Oh we said goodbye
I can't predict the fools we meet
If only we could rest our thoughts on time
Wrap it up together neatly in rhyme
I never sought out for this life
I've always been stuck writing sad songs
Nothing ever came to me in the light
Spent my whole life to find out what it means
Wrote it all down and ran away
Oh I ran away
I ran away
Well I used to be sure footed
Strong in all the wrong ways
But now I stand dizzy
And endure your shelter and haze
My tongue is weak from holding my speech
Who will fight for me
Take my advice
Never, never, never steal the heat
Well I used to be cold hearted
But now my warmth slows me down
I sit down at the faded red
All the while to escape my head
But you kept me here
Finite, masterful
Take my advice
Never, never, never steal the heat
about
As with any music I have put out into the world, this EP came about intentionally and surreptitiously. I have quite a bit of unreleased material these days and I'm working on slowly recording it and releasing it over time.
The songs were written during a period of my life filled both with great loss and growth. They also speak to the feelings of excitement and anxiety about coming out of the darkest periods of Covid lockdown, but also the nostalgia for how things 'used to be' before the pandemic began.
I began recording the vocal and guitar parts for 'Headlights' and 'Sure Footed, Cold Hearted' with the kind and keen engineer Luke Dumke at his amazing little studio in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. I enlisted Seattle's finest drummer, William Mapp, to record drums parts for these songs which he executed at his home studio.
For the next portion of this EP project I had booked some time at my favorite magical studio, The Unknown, in Anacortes, WA. I brought together a 5-piece band of my friends and Seattle's great session players to live-track a couple songs there. However, before the date we had booked there the engineer, Nich, got sick and we were forced to reschedule. It was a challenge to get all these musicians together on a date the studio was open.
William offered up his garage studio to do some tracking in place of the full band live setup we had rehearsed. He had mostly used this space for recording drum overdubs on his own, but was interested in using his skills and space to do some more full scale recording. It ended up being a great low-pressure situation that allowed me to feel free and creative while working on recording 'I Don't See Lovin,'' which is a song that is close to my heart. We did another session to finalize odds and ends, and William offered to mix the track himself.
In the space since these recordings happened I made the decision to leave Seattle, WA where I had lived for close to a decade and move to Nashville, TN to continue to pursue music opportunities. I was distracted from finishing these three songs, but eventually found the mixes that I had begun working on and recorded some guitar and vocal parts on my own to fill out the recordings. I begun mixing it on my own, but my skills are limited in this realm so I ended up being frustrated with what I came up with. William was interested in working on his mixing skills, which he had been honing as a remote recording session drummer, and he came up with a second draft that supported these songs in the best possible way.
I enlisted Nicholas Wilbur to do the mastering for the EP, which made these dated-to-me recordings sparkle.
It's amazing that these songs are here, and I'm curious to hear how you relate to them based on your life experiences.
